Clear as Mud: John Devolle.
I was born and raised in Birmingham England, but moved to London in 1996 in order to study fine art at the University of Westminster. For many years the more creative side of me was on hold while I worked predominantly as a freelance graphic designer in order to support various musical endeavors, during this time I was guitarist in a punk-blues-garage band called Junkbox, who released music in the UK and an ill-fated LP in the USA .
Since 2009 I have been gravitating more towards illustration, and in 2011 I completed a short course in illustration at Central St Martins College which really helped me to focus on what I wanted to do. Since then I have been working under the name Clear as Mud and am now a full-time freelance Illustrator, specialising in editorial and infographic work. However I still undertake the occasional ‘graphic design’ project.
I produce a lot of editorial work often on a quick turnaround. Starting with a strong idea or concept I combine various digital/vector techniques with hand rendered textures and patterns.
I now live , work and walk the dog in Walthamstow, East London.
